Quarantine Update

We give thanks for you all with great joy in our every prayer for you all.  (Philippians 1:4, Ephesians 1:16)

During this quarantine, we’ve daily been very blessed to learn more of God’s grace here in Peru. One of my good friends says that Apologist Ravi Zacharias would always say that the grace of God is "a perpetual novelty”…. Wow!  Watching grace happen before our very own eyes is a beautiful gift from God and it never gets old. Everyday the cross is amazing! That is what we get to experience here with discipleship. We always thank God for giving us the desire to be discipled and the joy disciple others. We’re also very thankful for the desire God gave others to disciple us. We are forever grateful for those who took the time and patience to help us be led by the Spirit. Those who helped us and showed us how to love, and serve with joy. It is with such gladness that we make disciples that make disciples…

Once the quarantine started, the church gathering never ended for us we started doing more home groups early on.

We are doing our best to abide by the current laws/rules of the quarantine. By law we are not to have a gathering larger than 10, so we’ve made it to where our brothers and sisters can meet in their home with their families and neighbors, in Pueblo Viejo. We’ve also tried our best to encourage the deaf church through video messages. The seminary students that live with us have been training and discipling. We have taught  have some to play guitar and are doing a great job of leading a study and worship here at home and one in their home. We are super proud of these brothers and sisters that stepped up continued to worship Jesus during this difficult time. It blesses our heart to see others lead and we get to watch the body of Christ at work.

It seems like God has used this time to help us grow in many ways. Remember Walter? Two years ago Walter made a decision to follow Christ and through lots of love and patience from the Spirit, Walter is now doing an awesome job discipling and sharing the gospel with the sureness that you have prayed for. Walter has been growing so much with the rest of the seminary students. It seems like they’re doing all the work and they don’t really need me anymore. (They never needed me.) These guys are growing and I’m super excited for how the Lord will use them in the future. (We often pray that we can see more disciples make disciples.)

We never thought we would be giving so much food, through this outreach program. Through this, we are so excited how God is working. As we've had more people come  to receive food, more local brothers and sisters have started to give more through donations. Now we have over 600 people coming for food. Most of you who know me know that I’m really big on discipleship in small groups but the food relief has allowed the seminary students to have a large audience and lose some of their stage fright. Although these students have been able to preach in front of several congregations, they were able to share with a large attentive crowd. It is basically a large outdoor gathering with worship a short message, during each food distribution day. Brothers and sisters from the Pueblo Viejo church are truly helping and loving their neighbor.

We are asking for help at this time. We are humbled by all the support that came in for the food relief program in Pueblo Viejo. We thank you with all our hearts and we pray that the Lord will keep blessing you so that you will bless other missionaries too. At this time we thought we were about to have the quarantine lifted and only have enough for one more day of giving and we then  have to pull out. We really thought this was ending and wanted to give a couple more times as people waited to receive money from working. Sadly we just heard our quarantine/state of emergency has been extended until June 30th. We just learned that the people lining up to receive food at 10am on Wednesday’s and Saturday’s have been arriving at 4:30am and waiting. We have already announced that we love them and we would love to do this at least once or twice after the quarantine is lifted, and now we’ve learned today it has been extended....but that we can’t promise  to continue much longer. If one more is all we can do then we are forever grateful for all that everyone did and it was more than I could ever imagine. It brought me to tears several times when we saw that funds were coming in and that some of the locals were helping us even in the midst of struggling times. With their help the cost each time we distribute food is around $3.00-$4.00 per person which adds up to $1,700.00 twice a week. Please share this need with anyone you think would be interested in helping fund this feeding outreach for one more month. We’ve invested as much as we can ourselves and reached our limit.

Our quarantine started March 15, so it’s been over 2 months now. This food relief program been going on for nearly 2 months now. Our  numbers have grown from about 20 church members...and now up to about 600 families come for food.

Apart from Pueblo Viejo many from the deaf church stop by our house for bags of food.. and we deliver to other families as well. Since everything started, we’ve gained favor with the police, helping with order for food distribution. We cannot be more grateful for what you’ve given, and if you feel led, we would greatly appreciate it if you would help us continue strong and be able to help these people at least a couple more times, or until this quarantine lifts.

Please let us know how we can be praying for you. We know this struggle hasn’t been in Peru alone, and we love and miss our friends and family back home. Our borders may not be opened again until October.  Please pray for wisdom for the Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra as he makes important decisions during this difficult time.

With thankful hearts, grace and peace in our Lord Jesus,

Dan and Ruthie Nagao
